Buster

A longtime Debian user installs Version 10 “Buster”.

Gnome

Downloaded the Gnome based iso, then went online to find someone who had traveled this road before. I was building a new VirtualBox VM with Buster, and found an individual who had done just that.

The graphical install was short and elegant, I was so proud of my Debian.

The new 47gb Buster VM needed files from the former 80gb Jessie VM, how do?

There is a guide, add the 80gb VDI as a secondary SATA drive in the Buster VM settings, fire it up, launch Nautilus and mount the 80gb VDI, then copy what you needs from one Nautilus window to another.

LAMP

Apache had an informative installation article out there, so did MariaDB, PHP had numerous guides. Everything I was doing needed an article cause I was in the land of Buster, whole new set of configs and systemctl is your buddy now.

Samba

The glue that binds Linux to Windows, what a time we had before Samba.

Samba let’s me work on Windows 10 and keep my complete dev environment on a safe Ext4 partition. With the proper directory config settings in smb.conf, I can throw stuff up on the web server with www-data gaining ownership.

Linux

Long before I got into the PHP world, I was in the Linux world, doing similar. Joining communities via newsgroups, emailing Open Source devs, testing out the latest and greatest, and most importantly being a cheerleader.

What has totally amazed me, in the process of getting a new Debian based VM up and running, was the fact that most of the guides that I followed were web pages on web sites written up by volunteers.

Web Sites, not on Twitter, nor Facebook, honest to goodness sites.

Open Source, damn proud to be a part of it all!

Dude in the McAlpine

In my mind I’m gone to Carolina
Can’t you see the sunshine?
Can’t you just feel the moonshine?
Ain’t it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind?
Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind
