Back in 1998, when commenting on blogs started to take off, the web was a different place. Blog comments were friendly, hey I like your site, or super nice pasta recipe. Then the bots started coming around, first they were robotic, programmed, then they were human, paid.

Today, if I were handing a blog over to someone, a person who’s had limited Internet exposure to the Trolls, I would inform them of the perils of letting them in. I would tell them that a thick digital skin is only derived from experience, and it’s the only way to cope with the deluge. I would teach them to recognize a genuine comment, and to just ignore the rest.
Now let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west
- We’ve had the moderate comments option for sometime, where comments go on hold, you get to decide if they should publish, so much for open discussion.
- Then web services sprung up where you fed them your comment stream and it would check it for spam, comments deemed good were let publish.
- Getting popular now are the farm it out to someone else service, let them deal with it. For a first time blogger, I would recommend this option.
